This challenge is built for the New Year. There are 100 boxes on the page, each with an amount between $5 and $36. Every time you save, color in a box for that amount. Fill them all before December 31 and you have $2,027 saved.

That works out to about two boxes a week. Because you pick the boxes, you can save more in good weeks and color in a small one when money is tight.

How it works

The total matches the year: 100 boxes add up to exactly $2,027. You choose which box to color in each time, so the pace is up to you. Saving about $39 a week gets you there by December 31, but you can do bigger boxes on payday and small ones in tight weeks.

Ways to use it

  • Start late: begin in February or March and simply color in a little faster.
  • Share it: a couple or family can each pick a pen color and fill the same sheet.
  • Make it automatic: set a weekly transfer of $39 and color in boxes that add up to it.

Tips

  • Keep the savings in a separate account so it does not get spent by accident.
  • Coloring a box on payday makes it a habit.

Questions

How much do I need to save each week to save $2,027 in 2027?

About $39 a week, or under $6 a day. Because you pick the boxes, any mix of amounts works as long as all 100 are colored in by the end of the year.

What if I start after January?

You can start any time. If you begin in March, you have about 43 weeks left, which is about $47 a week.

Do I need cash for this challenge?

No. Most people move money into a savings account and color in the box. Cash in an envelope works too.
